Sirens! Not the fun kind though...
The day began with the sounds of sirens for Mei. But her ears were ringing, not being filled with enchanting melodies. She curled up further into her sheets, the thins walls failing to block the sound from outside. Rolling over, her drowsiness was soon replaced by an aching head. She'd fallen off her bed. It was going to be one of those days. But on the bright side, ghosts were supposed to be more active in the morning. At least that's what Nainai said when Mei had visited her and her grandfather when she was younger.
"Sunnu, be careful in the mornings." she always said. While her mother was less keen on their shared fixations on spirits, Mei had been undeterred.
Her mother called it bullshit. She was wrong. Mei slipped on her rain jacket, and put on her glasses. She couldn't imagine going anywhere without them. After all, what if she found proof? Then she'd just be as foolish as mother said she was. But mother wasn't important. Stepping out the door to her apartment, she looked down the hallway. This place had seen far, far better days. But that was exactly what she wanted. It had that energy. You know the kind. The type you feel walking across a deserted lot late at night. The kind you have when you're getting water in the middle of the night when you're staying at someone else's house. The surreal yet empty quality, akin to limbo. She'd find a spirit here. Many people had missed things just under their noses in the past, and Mei had no intention of being one.
There were no cold spots today. Most people would see that as a miracle, especially in a drafty old building like the western end of the Maitland, but Mei couldn't be more disappointed.
Mei hissed under her breath, disappointed yet again. She took the stairs down to the lobby instead of the elevator. Her neighbors were mislead, so she was rather cautious with just talking to them in general. But more often than not life had other plans for her. Sayori Fuji could have a future as a police officer considering how effective she was at blockading the hallway. She also had an incredible ability to drag her wagon up the stairs of the building. Why she didn't take the elevator more often was beyond Mei, but she was certain that that 8 year old was stronger than she was.
"HEY, GHOST LADY!" she screeched. I guess Mei was right, banshees do exist.
